Fracture Healing
Medically speaking, a fracture is a broken bone. Fractured bone, broken bone, cracked bone, they all have a similar meaning: a bone that has been damaged in such a way that it is no longer intact.38
Yes, most people feel pain when they fracture a bone. Pain is your body´s natural response when a bone breaks.39
In general, there are three stages of pain following a bone fracture. These are referred to as acute pain, subacute pain and chronic pain.39 Other painful symptoms you might experience, depending in part on which bone you broke and the extent of the trauma, include bruising, stiffness, swelling, and weakness.40

Although the healing time of a broken bone is not the same for everyone, bones can take three to six months to heal to a significant degree.42 If this amount of downtime is more than you would like, there are several professional remedies to speed up the process of bone healing. Possible remedies to speed up the bone healing process include exercises, physical therapy and the EXOGEN bone stimulator.1,2,39

Using EXOGEN to Treat my Fracture

Most patients don’t feel anything at the treatment site.

Different fractures heal at different rates. Your physician will determine the necessary length of your treatment during follow-up appointments.
There are no known contraindications for the use of the EXOGEN device. The EXOGEN package insert includes a section on Precautions and Warnings that highlights situations in which the safety and effectiveness of EXOGEN has not been established, such as specific patient circumstances involving certain types of medication or medical problems other than fractures.

Summary of Indications for Use
EXOGEN is indicated for the non-invasive treatment of osseous defects (excluding vertebra and skull) that includes the treatment of delayed unions, nonunions,* stress fractures and joint fusion. EXOGEN is also indicated for the acceleration of fresh fracture heal time, repair following osteotomy, repair in bone transport procedures and repair in distraction osteogenesis procedures.
There are no known contraindications for the EXOGEN device. Safety and effectiveness have not been established for individuals lacking skeletal maturity, pregnant or nursing women, patients with cardiac pacemakers, on fractures due to bone cancer, or on patients with poor blood circulation or clotting problems. Some patients may be sensitive to the ultrasound gel.

*A nonunion is considered to be established when the fracture site shows no visibly progressive signs of healing.
